When there is a nationwide market for a FEW excellent games, (instead like the music market which is able to sell greater variety), if a game sucks, whether or not the programmers worked damn hard on it, doesn't matter.
I love the game Knights and Merchants (pick up the demo if you don't have it). Its SO cool watching the thousands of frames of animation -- the butcher making sausage, that EVERY single barrel of wine, loaf of bread or bundle of wheat is shown on the building itself. Its has an innovative interface and one of the best resourse systems ive ever seen. And some of the worst combat. And its gfx are good, but a 'little' dated (not like war2 dated, like a mix between War2, Ultima, and something else :-) It will never sell well, even though its obvious tons of work was put into it, because there are other games better than it. Its how the system works.
